Palm Jumeirah, Truck Tunnel, Dubai, United Arab Emirates
A reinforced concrete Tunnel approx. 1.4Km long (1km under water) is linking the trunk of the Palm to the outer crescent.
The Contractor opted for a more traditional construction method casting the base, walls and roof slab of the Tunnel separately, rather than casting the base then the walls and roof slab together using a special traveling steel shutter.
One of the major factors in this decision was that they could accelerate the work at any time by purchasing additional sets of base wall or roof slab support formwork which would be far cheaper than having to purchase an additional set of a special steel traveling wall and roof slab support system.
PERI Vario Wall Formwork System was chosen for the base slab edge formwork as well as the external and internal tunnel walls due to the excellent concrete finish achieved and the speed it can be erected, striped and moved.
For the roof slab support PERI PD8 tableform system was selected as a result of its high leg load capacity, fast erection / striking time and safe, easy movement using the transportation trolleys.
One of the main requirements of the wall formwork tie rod system was that the sealing of the holes must withstand a pressure of 3 bar. With this in mind the PERI DK sealing cone system was used which can withstand water pressure up to 5 bar. This system relies on a concrete cone which is glued into the hole left by the DK plastic cone to stop water penetration at the face of the wall and not at the centre of the wall like the centre water stop system, which is less effective.

We have decided to use PERI for our Tunnel project – The Palm Jumeirah – because of the short cycle time, the technical support on site and the easy handling for our tradesmen.
